If on a winter's night ... by Sting

If on a Winter's Night...
is a studio album from Sting. The album is a collection of Christmas and winter-themed songs mostly written by others, including folk songs, madrigals and religious hymns from past centuries. Dozens of musicians appear on the album in various configurations, including jazz, folk and classical players.
It was released in most countries in October and November 2009. The album was released in several formats (vinyl, CD, a limited edition CD and a making-of DVD - The Genesis of 'If on a Winter's Night...' in Six Chapters in hardback book packaging, an Amazon exclusive version, as well as various import editions; of note is the Japanese edition). The limited edition and Amazon exclusive both include bonus songs; the Japanese edition include them as well but adds "The Coventry Carol." The album includes a reworking of "The Hounds of Winter" from his album Mercury Falling. The title of the album is based on the novel If on a winter's night a traveller by Italo Calvino.

The Raampoortje in Amsterdam Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk 1809

The 18th-century Raampoortje was part of Amsterdam’s city rampart near the Bloemgracht. The small gate gave access to the bleaching fields outside the city wall, where dyed cloth was laid out to dry on wooden frames, from which the Raampoortje (Frame Gate) got its name. Here we look from the bleaching fields past the houses on the Bloemgracht towards the cold and wintry city. The Westertoren rises in the distance. The gate was demolished in 1846.

Lost Detective Novel Republished

I like to read a bit of fiction at Christmas and so when I saw this in a book shop the other day I bought it. I hope it will be good. Originally published in 1948, it was somehow 'Lost'. It has now been republished with an attractive Christmassy cover. We'll see.
